Pacific Gull Pics

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Pacific Gull Pics

Here are some pics of juvenile Pacific Gulls taken at Queenscliffe Vic,

D2X and 70-200 vr , i took over 60 frames as they were moving around a lot, also used the hi-speed crop at times, i feel i am becoming more capable with the D2X , and since i obtained Tom Hogans e book on the X i have learned heaps, this is one hell of a camera, i expose around 400 pics a week one way or another as it is my way of teaching myself how things work and the functions and variations of the X are very involved ( at least to a luddite like me !!) but boy is this one hell of a camera and worth avery penny.

What a strange looking bird. Looks like a cross between a seagull and a toucan.

Nice sharp shots mate, it looks like you're mastering the D2x mate.

Owen, thanks mate, yes they are a little weird looking i suppose and large ! they are about twice the size of a normal gull ,these are juveniles , when they mature their plumage turns to black and white and the beak is a deep yellow

Great captures Nikon Boy. I'm not sure but are they Petrels?
You are dead right once mastered it's one hell of a camera. I really like #1 with the bird looking under its wing nice perspective. What autofocus mode did you use?

Hi Marco, we call 'em Pacific Gulls , but must look them up and find out more,

I activated the continous focus selector ( front of camera ) , AF-C with focus priority custom setting a1, and single area AF mode, and frame rate of CHi, does this answer your question ?

Thanks Nikon Boy. You don't know the deliberations I'm having as to whether to get the D200 and maybe a 105 micro and/or 12-24 AFS or just buy the D2X. By jove its tempting and seeing your work encourages me but hearing the learning curve grind BBJ and others are experiencing with the D2X discourages me. Woe is me :? :) Well I can think of worst dilemmas to be in :lol:

Marco , don't be afraid of the D2X or blinded by negative opinions
and people having trouble with it, it aint that hard to use, if a luddite like me can use one ANYONE can !!!
