aftermath of weekends rain (3 images possible dialup warning

I have been sitting here watching the rain come down over the weekend, disappointed that it was too wet to go bush go for a walk.
I visited a local reserve which has a little waterfall just to see how the rain effected it.
It was roaring so I decided that if the rain went away for a while I would go back with the camera. It did but the water flow had dropped off to half by the time I returned with the camera.
here are 3 shots from the shoot.


I have another of this which has been spot metered. It gave the water a significantly darker vignette .
I didnt mind it that much but opted for this image instead



These are all full frame cropped to pano for effect
I took a series for making a stitched pano but havent got around to that yet.

edit : had a look at the series for stitching. Not really suitable in this case.
unfortunately they had to be taken close to the falls.
The necessary use of wide angle lens causes an unnatural look when joined. Will have to settle for these shots.

I think it was well worth the trip back with the camera, lovely little water fall. Can't pick a favourite out of the three, I like them all.

Beautiful spot and well captured and exposed... Really nice framing and enjoyed the angles and composition, very nicely done and well saturated... #1 and #3 are magic, good stuff... Have a thing for nice waterfalls, lucky to have that near by...

Steve, some beautiful shots here. Some of the better ones I've seen of waterfalls on here in recent times too! I like #1 the most. I also look forward to seeing your attempted panos!! Keep up the great work

Out of curiosity - which camera did you use for these shots? I think some exif data too wouldn't go unappreciated

number #1 is from straight on, #2 and #3 are off to the right of that, thru tree ferns and the like.
Initially the waterfall was flowing over its entire length but by the time I returned it had dropped by half.

Yeah some nice shots which I think are really nice. Your images are very contrasty though, that was the first thing I noticed - not that that is a bad thing in this case though.

What kind of shutter speeds were used?

1 was multi zone because there was a range of tones in the whole scene

2 was centre weighted because I was primarily interested in the water which was a fair amount of the scene

3 was spot metered off the white water and I usually expect bright white to need +2 ev to expose correctly (tested this once with a gray/white card)
In this case 2 ev gave a little more vignetting

some nice photos here ....

the only thing I could suggest for next time is also use a ND filter for slower shutter speeds for a more silky effect on the flowing water and the water in the pool.

I actually tried the nd this time but the volume of water flowing made it look crummy this time.


Previously used a lot slower shutter speeds at this spot and I got really milky looking water, but this time decided against it.
