Palazzo Versace in the Gold Coast

Hi Everyone

Here are a couple of photos I took with my old 3.2MP point and shoot when I went to Gold Coast last weekend.

I did wish I had the D70 with me but Doug was using it. I know the photos are grainy but I was practising composition, here are 2 photos that I like. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for your encouragement. I wish I took more photos, I did not take many.

I am going to use the point and shoot camera to practice composition by taking lots of photos of anything. That's all it's good for

Genista - the composing of both pics is fine.

On the first pic there is just one little thing that needs fixing - the light from the window is distracting on the floor. This can be cloned in PS or another method is to select that particular point of the floor and alter the brightness and/or contrast within the area although it looks as if there is no detail to be recovered in the very front of the light beam.

If shot in RAW format one could always do a bracketing of the shot and then layer compose between light and dark.

I did ask Doug if I could fix the overexposure but he said that I can't because the detail was already lost. I will have to take an underexposed photo next time (exposed correctly for the window) and blend in photoshop. Unfortunately this point and shoot does not have RAW mode, but I will experiment with the manual exposure mode.

Nice shots Little B - that P&S has done a pretty good job of the tricky lighting situations and you've shown a steady hand.

Palazzo Versace is really something else but, having been lucky enough to stay there several times, I have to say it's just too bloody over the top for my liking. I'm not a fan of the Versace design style and, naturally, there's no escaping it here. Food and service is excellent but I just found it very hard to relax with all that garish colour around me.

Those that have been there will know the cushions on those big round couches in the foyer (Little B's first photo) are actually attached to the seats with thick wire, to stop people stealing them. Fair thing too, they're probably worth $1000 each. Recently, one of the prizes on "Temptation" was a Versace bed including all the pillows, sheets and accessories. When she saw it, my youngest daughter laughed and said, "That'd be no good - the pillows are probably wired to the bed!"

Yes I was surprised with my steady hand for the night shot, since I did not have the tripod with me.

I did find it quite funny that the cushions were attached to the sofas. The cushions are actually $475 each, I checked it out at the Versace shop.

A few of my colleagues stayed at the hotel and I asked them what it was like, they told me that it was nice but they all felt that the the designs and colours were garish as well (they were men) . So I was prepared for it but I was surprised to find that the rooms looked fairly reasonable to me.

I did have a good experience staying there, I would go back again.

Nice shots Genista, and in my experience you can never have enough practice whatever the equipment your using. These are nicely composed, perhaps you should suggest to Doug that he gets a D200 after Xmas that way I am sure he'll let you take over ownership of the D70.... or better still use get the D200 yourself

Well I think he has enough toys for now... tripod, 50/1.4, SB-800. Sounds like it's time for you to have a turn picking a toy. Hehe.

Hehe, if I was with Genista of course she could have used the D70. But Genista was at the Gold Coast with her mother. If I let Genista take the D70, I would not have taken those photos of Tiger Lily, or any photos at last weekend's night shoot. I wouldn't have even been able to attend. And I wouldn't have my SB-800 right now if it wasn't for the fact that I took my camera to last Saturday's mini meet. I tried LostDingo's SB-800 and fell in love with it.

Also, don't let LittleB make you feel sorry for her. She can get her own camera! If I give her my camera all the time, then she has no need to get her own camera. If I keep it from her, I create the need.
