Bel and I also had the pleasure of seeing Leigh strut his stuff last night at the National Art School. Not only is Leigh really a freak, he also is a VERY talented actor. We enjoyed the play lots! Here are some of my shots, we were almost at the back of the hall, about 20metres from the stage. All my shots were taken with the 70-200VR most at 2.8 with ISO at, yes you guessed it 1600. No flash used. We also had the pleasure of sitting with Jo and Chrissy and Chi. Chi and Wendell were both up the front with their mono's so seeing their shots from Friday night's performance will be good!

Great shots geoff you captured leigh in full flair, especially at that distance. Your shots are surprisingly not as noisy as the D2X,i was shooting at ISO 1600 with the new d2X firmware that supposedly has better noise reduction routines, but my shots are visibly noisier than yours!
Leigh really is a star and a modest one at that which annoys the hell out of me, anyone who can remember and act out a whole dialogue from Shakespeare is a genius! I can't let alone remember what i ate for breakfast today nor act out the manner in which I went about eating my food, so how the hell can Leigh remember all those complicated lines and act them out too while being fondled by gorgeous women and onlooked by a critical and discerning crowd? Anyway Geoff wish i could of chatted more but i arrived late and had to setup, You, bel, joe and chryssine left the scene early too we did not get to catch up, what's was up with that? I think one of the most photographic scenes was the one with Titania and Leigh, the scenes that you captured and the ballet dancers at the end. Leigh, Chi and I went out afterwards and got totally plastered. We managed to get home safely though as we always do. Great night!!
Thanks for your comments Wendell. Yep...for the time being the D70 and the array of lenses that I now own do me just right, there will probably come a day when I upgrade to the D200/D2X but for now, I'm happy! As far as leaving after the play ended, we had a house warming to go to and also Bel is working a 10hr day today! A shame we couldn't catchup yep, there's always next time though  .
Hope the headaches aren't too bad. I look forward to seeing some of your shots from last night - you were in a GREAT position! Geoff

why buy a D2X i think you misunderstood me the D2X produces way more noise than the D70, your shots are cleaner than mine at ISO1600 Craig ran out of time, hope to post images soon, but it really depends on when this headache will go away...

You've got some GREAT captures there Geoff. I can't believe how well you took those shots considering your shooting position!
I was anticipating lots of misfocussed shots of mine, but surprisingly a great number of them turned out well - compositionally speaking. I'm in the process of individually tuning each shot in Capture (as it has built in noise reduction so I don't have to fire up another program). Will post my shots soon. I look forward to Wendell's latter Friday night shots - you mentioned you were shooting jpeg, that's very daring of you! It was a great night, but the greatest part of the night was AFTER the performance!

Chi it's a relief to find out your o.k after last night whooooooooooohoooooo! shooting jpeg i had to since i already fulled up up to 6Gig of CF cards, theatre productions is just so interesting to shoot, i had 30 good jpeg shots left for the last dance sequence.

Doug The lighting was not that warm i would say 5600K my camera's whitebalance is set with +1 Kelvin because i favour the warm tones, i like warm tones anyway it fells more intimate and has a better feel to it, the noise reduction does work in jpg mode but what i noticed form my shots the jpeg compression is so crap the image looks smooth anyway jpeg destroys detail such as noise and renders a smoothed out but jaggy image og well that goes to show you now why there is a practical use for multiple 4GIG cards - Shooting theatre! to tell you thr truth i went through 1x4gig 1x2gig, 2x1gig 4x512gig cards on both performances, shit hwo the hell am i going to go through all of these images? i think i have shot myself in the foot again.
A great group of photos of an event I would dearly love to have attended. One thing that jumps out of these is how "larger than life" our nnnnsic is when treading the boards. Well done to you all.

Yeah peter truer words were never spoken, our Nnnsic is much more docile on the forum in real life he certainly gets around, the biggest response i ever got form him on this forum is about 5 sentences.

Most of yours are great being very sharp and anticipated captures with real dramatic flair. The candid portrait of Chrysine is great! Theatre is such a cool thing to shoot it's so full of artistry, flair and a definite hotpot of photographic opportunities here is some of my stuff: the dance sequence at the end it was belle, my shooting style has a certain art direction to it so my shots are intentionally dark and biased towards the warmer tones(custom white balance) 
theatre plays are a great test for your compositional skills

You've captured the dance sequence really well Wendell. I ran outta film long before then, so it's great to see your pics. I see you've labelled Tanje in it too. :p
It's refreshing to see the play told from your perspective. It's not just from the other side of the room, it's from a totally different, with a more artisitc eye. I can't believe how 'wide' some of your frames were, considering you shot exclusively with the 70-200. T'was a great challenge to shoot theatre. The low light imposes some technical limitation, virtually forcing max ISO and widest aperture shooting. But there can never be artistic limitations - I think you've illustrated that well. I'd love to see more from you Wendell. And bigger sizes if possible! I basically shoot for 'the moment'. I wouldn't know artistic if it slapped me upside the head... My published shots are mostly what I see as the images that tells the most out of the 1000 words.
