VAN DIEMEN'S LAND pt1

My parents were touring tasmania from last week right through to the end of this week, I decided to visit them this weekend, flew down friday lunch got back monday lunch, Tasmania is an easy place to negotiate, it's small and has varied landscape and regions. the locals are mostly retirees. I remember one asking me 'Are you from the Mainland?' i wonder what hinted that query?

It was overcast, raining and windy most of the time but the sun popped out once in a while. Shot most with kit lens and 12-24DX with a polarizer
Table cape, Wynyard, not as many Tulips as advertised on the bloomin tulips festival homepage, but enough to get you giddy.

Monday morning 8:30am a couple of minutes before i had to zip out of there, ready to head back to the mainland.

Friday Afternoon Murdering Gully, Wynyard, quite a hike this one was, but the view was picturesque.



Friday afternoon, just after i arrived went straight to the tulip farms, this one was private, i was thinking of jumping the fence but i didn't want to encounter angry locals with pitchforks and shotguns in hand, or get my balls electrified by the electric fence.

Sunday, on the way to cradle mountain, my mother dresses up thematically wherever she goes and she likes to knit.

the lighthouse there, used my sb800 and included my scarf to give some quirky juxtaposed foreground interest to the image.

If I had to pick a fave it would be the last shot. A nice way to say thats it.

I really like the first one and other with brown, bare field. That is the top shot. Try to pump up a bit more blue into sky, it will give even greater contrast to brownish soil. Then you will have nice colour scheme: blue - green - brown.

Also the last one is quite exceptional. Wild land, harbour, fog over mountains and unusual lady's outfit bring to me na image of Norwegian fiords. Realy moody and in some ways groove (?). The second top shot.

23 awesome pics by you + one dud (sunday morning, davenport) - don't count your mum's pic. These are an amazing set of shots. Impossible to pick a favourite.

I was talking about your pics to a few people at the weekend (I didn't think the fashion pics suited your style and was happy to say so). These show your skill in abundance and this is your groove. Forget all those anorexic coke whores and stick to stuff like this. The $$$ don't matter. Art feeds on poverty (gee I'm glad I'm not an artist).

Say what you really think Peter! Completely agree though, these are all great Wendell! I particularly like "sunday morning, davenport", "lighthouse + scarf", "brown field" and "Friday Afternoon Murdering Gully, Wynyard", but most of the others are top notch too!

I shall join the chorus of praise suggesting that this is far better work than the forced and pretentious stuff we've been seeing from you lately. A return to the form that first caught my eye.

It may be worth remembering that ART, like love, often happens when you are least seeking it.

By the way, I'd have grabbed the wretched tripod off Mum before shooting that last shot. It looks out of place on the one hand and makes a statement about you on the other in that you let your mum do your carrying.

Yes, a great collection of images.

I love the two of your mother, although slightly put off by the WA distortion of her body as she walks away from the camera in the last image.

I also really like "Murdering Gully" - an excellent landscape.

Have you read all the above post? I repeat: Great works from you, but not once again! Coz this set of pics are miles better, magnificent and rich colour, you knew how to score them, than shooting the young chicks on the runway and fashion shows which you posted previously.

Echoing from Stubbsy, I agreed, you're well in architecture and landscape photography but not in "light writting" & "Fashion show model shoot" styles. I've seen your other works and come into this conslusion.

thankyou everyone tasmania is a photogenic place it even has regions with lavender fields like in the south of france. It isn't expensive to travel there and stay 3 nights i think all up i spent $400

I will continue on with my other styles because i have had a long interest in them. My experimental work takes lots of practice to get right and i am willing to stick with it like the way rokkstar revisits his smoke work time and time again or mic revisits his inverting, or the way leigh revisits his flights into boredom sessions, i will revisit my lightscribing and fashion work.

My comments were presented more from the viewpoint that you need to work harder to get those other areas of endeavour up to the standard that you have attained with these Taswegian images.

problem with online forums is that you cant verbally convey what you really mean, I know people are just saying landscape may be my groove
without saying give up on the other experimental stuff, you can use verbose language or little widget icons to punctuate your statement but still this asci format of communication leaves lots of room for misiterpretation.

You spotted it right! I'm just praised you on the landscaping and architecture photography, again, coz I have seen your stuffs few times.
I did not talked you out of doing other bits, those are your passion, perhaps.
You never will gain all top rank in all areas, you may have one top and other at the bottom, but learning and doing is always your choice.
Pls. don't mis-interpretation as other mentioned, I still prefer to see your works in Landscaping and Architecture rather than on people as I have seen.

As someone of Taswegian (and yes that's a term we use a lot) heritage I'm familiar with many of these locations and your shots are inspiring. Maybe next year sometime after Tanzania I can get back to Tasmania!

One of the beauties of this forum - one can see an image, read a bit about what was done to capture it, and learn from it.
I particularly like the F22 on the beach at Devonport with the flash. It shows me that I really do take this place for granted.
There are frequent times when I want to stop the car and grab the camera. Seeing photos like this from "down the road" from where I live, well if these don't give me the inspiration, nothing will.

Awesome Wendell. Colours as only the D2X can produce. Beautifully composed and despite the odd case of lens flare they are all superb. One of my favourites, despite the flare is the pebbly beach foreground scene, fantastic.

thankyou everyone Tasmania was a magical place and i was only there for 2 and a half days, i wasn't expecting i would get very far but i managed to see some wonderful places.

here are some more:
My mother blending in at cradle mountain. If you were wondering about the blue bulge, it's actually her handbag under her blue top, she is quite slim.


At cradle mountain national park, it was misty and humid i got condensation forming inside the kit lens and camera, i got some artistic difussed shots before i noticed something was wrong. My kit lens hasn't been the same since.


cradle mountain has so many surreal vistas, looks like a deadzone riddled with alien moss and plant life. This place would be great for a fashion shoot.


After a rainy day at cradle mountain there was a gorgeous blue patch with a radiant sun on the way back to wynyard


I love landsapes with feature elements in it but i must confess i was lucky with this shot i just saw the bunch of trees, later on i found out i got the trees smack bang in the middle of the two fence posts - talk about a delightful fluke!

My fav is #4 in this sequence. Such a natural setting, I would have got rid of the wires and guidepost, but I understand the artistic impression some desire by the addition of abstracts etc to settings, and that's fine too.
How about the colour of that sky!!
