D7000 - First Pix

The D7000 landed today and after an impatient wait for the battery to charge up. slapped on the nifty 50 and went for a quick wander to try it out.

First impression when I picked it up was that the handgrip was uncomfortable. Its profile is more squared off than my D90. I'm sure I'll get used to it quickly though. The shutter release feels quite different as well. It has a softer (dare I say, sexy) feel in operation. Very nice.

Otherwise it feels very similar to the D90 with the majority of controls being similarly placed.

Anyhow, without further ado, here are a couple of pix. They're nothing special, dull grey day here today, but they show the camera is working

We would all love to see some real world high ISO shots (of the same subject) with and without noise reduction.

Congratulations on the purchase of a camera which will undoubtedly be a hit in the market.
Had a feel of one in Brisbane last Friday that had just arrived at DDP.
Looking to purchase one from the US for my wife when B&H restocks.

Have been following some overseas forums where the first pics are being posted and have to say the camera looks very promising. A bit of comment about soft pics which I would have to assume is a mixture of the sensor outresolving some of the cheaper lenses and the effect of one of the smallest pixel pitch sensors avaiable on the market.
There are plenty of good pics posted to suggest it's nothing more sinister.

Went outside and took these of the street lights. They are straight out of the camera, a little sharpening in viewnx (Lightroom doesnt support it yet but I see an rc release which I'll download later), exported to PS and they are 100% crop. No noise reduction has been used either in camera or in software.

And that's the only reason I am hesitating. I'll want a new camera before March next year for a trip, but I am going to delay as long as possible in the hopes that the D400 will come out before then. I like the form factor of my D200 over the D90.

Sizewise, there isn't a noticeable difference between the two of them and its slightly heavier (70 - 80 gms if I remember rightly). The most noticeable differences betwen them is the handgip (mentioned in my initial post) and the buttons on the back are closer to flush with the body. I assume that has something to do with the improved weatherproofing.

I haven't tried the video function yet. That feature isnt very high in my priorities. The D90's movie function is ok but not a "must have", and I don't expect the D7000 to improve on it much. WIll try it out when we have a sunny day.

Hope the wait for the D400 isnt too long for you , Mr Darcy. It should be a ripper, but then so will the D700 replacement...it's neverending.

I am wanting video in DSLR so am looking at options. My D700 is such a good camera, I would be happy for one with video. Was going to go a D3s but still want my popup flash..

The new Nikon is supposed to do video with auto focus a lot better than was the standard before..

I guess with the video function now in DSLR's the sensor technolgy must have improved to a point where long exposures are possible. What is the longest video it can take? I should jsut google it..


ANy way enjoy it, once the frenzy drops I may pick one up to compliment my D700 and as a walk around..

Matt, this is a link to quick little crappy vid which hopefully will give you a bit of an idea. The original looks quite good and is better than the D90, which it should be.

33eli & biggery - I got it from DigitalRev. Cost $1616, delivered, duty paid. I ordered it on friday afternoon and it was delivered monday morning. I havent dealt with them before and was impressed by this service.
