Sophisticated and Beautiful, could these be inherent qualities in the person who captured them?

Big Pix,

I had a serious think about your comment because I initally felt something similar. But then it occurred to me that if the stamen were set level that the whole might take on the role of something of a parody of a carnivale mask and the detract from the simple beauty of the actual flowers.

If anything I would suggest that the light is a little too harsh - a faint diffusion with a pice of trace over the lamp might let the light caress the petals and show their subtle texture more than we see at present.

Most of the Fine-Art Flora photographer community seem to visit the lilly in one form or another and that is partly due to the impact of well resolved delicate highlight texture and form. Mic, if you haven't already, might I suggest that you reference some of Mapplethorpe's lilly snaps, or Imogen Cunningham's. Tom baril is also a great exponent.

For something different you could seek out Kenro Izu who, in a way indicative of his Zen tradition, waits for days and photographs the flowers as they become sinuous and limp as they approach the throes of death.

I love the yellow glow from the stamen, by the way. Very rewarding shot!

Cheers,

Mic,
I'd love to be able to pinpoint exactly why I love this shot, as Sheetshooter has done so eloquently, but it just comes down to the fact that everything just seems to come together and work. It's just so bloody appealing.
Well done.

Very nice indeed. I was reading about achieving the result you have acquired in your image on Nikonians yesterday and i thought i might dabble with it too. Hopefully i can get results as good as your lilies. Well done.

Thanks bp, Thats just how I shot it, thats how they were standing.
Thanks Sheetshooter, I'll look up those Photographers, thanks for the hints.
I shot this under natural sunlight, dropped the shadows more, then just cloned out the white highlights in the background.

Thanks Manta, glad you love it. :D
Thanks johnd,
Thanks Oneputt,
Thanks Killa, Must of been someone else on Nikonians, I haven't been there
