Wow Kerry, such detail. Especially in the beetle's eyes. Is there anything you can do about the dof on the back end of the beetle and on his antenae? Or is that the typical characteristic of macro?
I haven't gotten into macro yet but I've seen so many interesting macro pix I find myself lusting for and saving for the 105mm Nikon micro lens. D3, D300, 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8, 85/1.4, 80-400VR, 18-200VR, 105/2.8 VR macro, Sigma 150/2.8 macro

Hi John,
Thanks for the kind comments. ![]() Not much to be done with the DOF. As you guessed, macros typically have very narrow DOF. These 2 shots are slightly over a 1:1 magnification ratio, so at f/22, the total DOF would be less than 1.5mm. Here's a link to a guy named Martin that is very, very good at macros and he has some photos and a DOF chart in this post. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=14466678 my gallery of so-so photos

Thanks Kerry. I checked out the link. They are great shots and a very interesting table. Sure gives you an appreciation of dof at diferent f stops. Only .5mm dof at f8, that's not a lot to work with. I guess most macro glass goes up to a fairly high f number. D3, D300, 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8, 85/1.4, 80-400VR, 18-200VR, 105/2.8 VR macro, Sigma 150/2.8 macro
