Thank you everybody,
I used the Hoya R72. What I found is that the pictures have to be on the underexposed side to get some blue in the sky after mixing the channels.
Cheers,
Gerard

Very nice image Gerard. I love this type of IR photography.

I have never really understood it though. I know that you don't just put the filter on and get shots like this out of the camera. What type of PP do you have to do in order to produce things like this? How much does an R72 IR filter cost?

Sorry for all the questions, it's just that I'm keen to try something like this but haven't the first clue where to start.

Cheers

Hi Gerard

This is a very dynamic scene, there is alot going on, although your use of the IR filter on a scene like this works extremely well.
How did you channel mix a red image to look black and white while maintaining blue the tones?

When i post process IR images i only know how to convert them to greyscale for best effect.

Probably the 67mm Birdy, for the kit lens. Looks like they start getting quite expensive.

I say over $150.00, am not sure, and I HATE this type of IR.
Why? I have been using the night vision goggle on my flight helmet for many years once I was in the military, not now and never will.

Great shot Gerard, I love IR stuff.

rokkstar, my R72 67mm for the kit lens cost about $70-$80 I think.

Rokkstar,
I paid $164 for the 72mm.
Wendellt-Rokkstar,
I picked up a few tips from a thread on dpreview. From memory, it goes like this (that's what I've done):
-WB: set wb on preset on measure on a piece of green grass. (No green grass as you would know, so I used a green bag from Aldi...about the same colour as Woolies and so on)
-Remove filter.
-Compose and manual focus.
-Put filter back on. (Obviously the camera is on a tripod)
-Shoot (Underexposed seems to work better)
PP
-Open in PS
-Auto levels
-Into channel mixer:red channel=red 0% / blue=100%
blue channel= red100% / blue0%
-Into saturation:red= -100
magenta= -1005
That's it!
You can play around with the settings in the channel mixer and so on...
Thank you for all the kind comments,
Cheers,
Gerard
