Hi,

tried my hand at a bit of PP with The Gimp. This first one is the shark tower at Redhead Beach. It usually is photgraphed from the beach, but I took this shot from above on top of the bluff. It was actually taken in RAW mode and I used The Gimp and DCraw to process it, there is a big learning curve for me there! The blue on the rocks is there but probably not quite as much as came out in the photo. This one was taken with a 70-300mm lens.


This next one was taken today at Nobbys in Newcastle, probably around the same time that pippin88 was photographing the other side. I tried my hand at B&W as I thought it really fitted the look of the moment.

Nikon D70s with kit lens 18-70mm

And for something totally different, my mailbox at sunrise with a PP fractal filter added for effect. Here again, I used the RAW image.

And I was wondering why the mailman takes so long to deliver my mail

from my perspective, I think they look a little too overexposed, or washed out.

I took the liberty (I hope you don't mind) of doing some slight PP to the first one (as below) - about 60 seconds work:



I adjusted a bit of levels, shadow/highlight and some USM...

I'd be interested to know what you think....

These are are really well put together shots... The first one does look over exposued or something though, Dave did well with that one. The second is a terrific framed image, that looks great. If you wanted to play in PP you could do things like curves on the skies, or local contrast stuff using USM on the land to extract or imply more detail.

That third one whoa.... I know I've had a couple but strewth what am I having...

Just tied a quickie (I like PP, it's fun) with the jpeg to crop and get a more windy, or maybe stormy or isolated feel. I've over-done the effect but the diff feel is fun, that blue is stunning... I'll delete in a day or two... Just a quick play with different feels, hope that's OK...

a habit I seem to have gotten into is checking the levels first, and correcting this before doing anything else. Not a hard and fast rule, but I've found I end up with good results when doing this before anything else.

If you play around for a while, you'll soon get the hang of what everything does...
