Well I was out enjoying my plane spotting hobby and this happened to land almost in front of me.. so I did what anyone with a camera in hand would do!

Nikon D70, Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX HSM+ 2xTC
1/160s f/5.6 at 400.0mm ISO 200
Location: CBR Airport

Comments welcome, does anyone know what sort of bird this is?

On good authority from me, it's a Nankeen Kestrel (Adult).

I'd invest a bit of time and clone out the barbwire from the picture. Great capture, sharp as and it'd be even better without the wire.

Yep, according to Morcombe's "Field Guide to Australian Birds" it's a Nankeen Kestrel (falco cenchroides). Hard to tell if it's a juvenile or an adult female - plumage is very similar. Kipper would be able to tell....

I knew you'd be out there waiting to swoop Darryl! Just got me while I was typing, and giving you a wrap at the same time!

It's a great shot Chris. I love the posture of the bird.

It's Adult, the Juvenille has a tad of pale brown/orange (same color as the topside of the wing) on the breast.

That's a great capture. Lovely and sharp and the bird engages the viewer really well.

Great capture, Chris. I agree with Kipper, it would look better without the barbed wire.

Hey Chris this is a great shot and such a nice looking specimen of a bird too. Well you are using great glass as well, us Sigma owners have to stick together.

You'd hate to be a mouse if that bird was looking at you like that.

Nice and sharp image.

What, you mean like this? :)
Btw, this is the same Black Shouldered Kite (or one of the pair) that we were shooting at WTP.

Chris - the shot you have taken is excellent - I would leave the barbed wire in the shot as it adds something different and has a good angle.

Great shot, pin sharp and full of colour. Keep the barbed wire in as i reckon it adds a bit of contrast to the bird.
