Ducks

I went to Brimbank Park today and came across some ducks that didn't mind me getting fairly close. Unfortunately, the sun stayed behind the clouds the whole time but I managed to get a few reasonable shots.

Sun behind clouds is always better than sun shining for photography...and it shows in the detail of your shots. The D70 forum is famous for its excellent duck pictures and is often bookmarked by the worlds greatest duckologists for research purposes. Your images coninue this fine tradition.

Wow!

Stunning shots Dave! Never knew duck shots could be so captivating. Beautiful detail. Agree with BP - last one is a winner.

I love #1 to #3, #4 is good too. However the first three show wonderful detail in the feathers and the eyes. Love in #3 how it's sort of laughing.

Excellent shots, Dave! Amazingly sharp in detail. Did you use 70-300 Sigma for these?

Thanks
Alex

These shots are great and I second Matt’s remark on the clouds. The sun in Australia can be the reason for many potentially great shots being spoilt.

The Sigma has shown its colours with these shots :D

thanks everyone for your positive comments. I know a lot of people like to knock the Sigma lens, and although it does have some serious limitations, it is possible to take good photos with it.

There was one particular duck that didn't mind me being close to him, so I was able to get to within about 2 metres.

I do know that overcast days are better for photography, generally, however I would have preffered a little more light so my shutter speeds could have increased. I tried bumping the ISO etc... but it didn't make enough difference to the shots that didn't turn out - OOF/camera shake(shooting @ 300mm with 1/50sec. handheld just doesn't work with this lens).

Still, I got some keepers out of the shoot, so I can't complain.....and most of all, it was FUN !
