Quiet Dignity

When we went to Hong Kong we looked at the history of the 'Rickshaw' - the human taxi fleet that used to service the Island.

Now there are only 4 licenses left with only 2 (1 part time) on the road.

This shot was taken up @ the peak (Peak Tram peak). This old gentleman was making his living selling tourist shots in one of the last remaining Rickshaws...eg pay $10 HK dollars (about $1.80AU) and you get your picture taken in the Rickshaw....we we gave him $20 and asked if we could take a shot of him (he was thrilled :))

What I like in this picture is the contrast in colours between the man and the Rickshaw and the man and modern Hong Kong. The main picture has been cropped/shrunk re download speed but the full size shows a face that has seen a hard life yet is not a sad face.

I understand he has spent his life carting Rickshaws until now, when in his older years he relies on his Rickshaw as a tourist posing seat.

I was constantly amazed and humbled at the dignity I saw in the older people in Hong Kong.

So true - I am always amazed by people on this planet who have had a hard life and yet can give such a wonderful smile. Well done these photos will remind you in later years of a time long gone - like the Bondi Trams

Should of asked him to wheel the Rickshaw down to a port and shoot him at dusk with the HK skyline in the background.

Have a chat to anyone that has been to Hong Kong - there is a Rolex for every man woman and child :)

Everywhere we went we were accosted with Indian sellers quoting 'copy rolex, copy rolex for you boss' - now I wish I had have obliged :)
