Greetings to everyone from the Gecko
This is my first post on anything anywhere, so here goes...

I got my D70 a few days before Easter and have been on a steep learning curve since, particularly in the area of WB and getting this right. This forum has been a gold mine of information and I have quickly become addicted to all that goes on here. It has taken me a while to get my mind around registering and learning how to post pics etc.

The attached pic was taken using a Nikkor AF 75-300 f4.5-5.6 (I didn't buy the G lens as I already had this one). I am interested in what others have found when using this or other older lenses with their D70's.... Thanks to the forum I am already feeling lens lust for something big and bright....



The image is of my daughter, accidently shot at IS0 800 so 1/1600 and f5.3 in portrait mode with auto WB. Obviously the pic is quite blue, the ocean was just over my shoulder on a bright cloudless day, so that has acentuated the blues even further.... what do others think?

Hi gecko - another Brisbaneite is certainly welcome.

This is a pleasant image of a very cute child - it looks like she is a bright redhead, too. The blues go well with that hair. You have a nicely OOF background which is ideal in a portrait. Perhaps it may have been nicer to have a full view of her face.

I hope we see more images from you - over time we may convince you to move away from some of the Auto settings to ones that will give you more artistic control, but first things first!

There is generally no problem employing older AF and AFS lenses with the D70. You may have read about the magnification factor over your previous 35mm camera.

Don't be afraid to ask questions - there is plenty of top quality photographic knowledge around here.

Welcome Gecko...... nice pix.......if you have photoshop just add a bit of yellow and even less of magenta, this will get rid of the blue and give her rosy cheeks.......

I have been doing a bit of experimentation - and shot lots of very ordinary pics. I am not using auto WB much at all, nearly every photo I take I am playing with the different WB settings to get a feel for what is happening - the beauty of shooting digital and getting feedback straightaway - but I still have a lot to learn. I am used to an F801, where I drive it manually most of the time (but don't use it much any more as I hate forking out for processing).

The quality of the images that I have seen on the forum is very high. I am going to have to work on my composition and creative skills....

Welcome aboard Gecko. Strap in tightly 'cos things move pretty quick here and you've got to be fit to keep up!

Love the photo but haven't really much to add over what's been said already. I know that's a bit of a cop-out but I've still got my own L-plates pretty firmly attached and haven't got the experience to give an educated critique. I still feel it's important to ackowledge new images and I try to comment in some way whenever I can. Especially if it's another Brisso!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome

I have been lurking for a while, I stumbled across the forum just as I was making my decision to buy a D70. I have learnt sooooo much just by reading through all the different discussions on the forum.

As a newbie to Digital photography, the idea of fiddling with an image using software seems a bit like cheating - how do others feel.... just get over it or are there image purists out there (if such a beast exists?)

Welcome Gecko - IMO photography is the art of visualisation and it goes both ways - purist and post purist. There are times when an ordinary photograph can become something tremendous just by applying some PP.

Hi Gecko, and welcome! Don't let anybody convince you that PP started with digital cameras, it's been around as long as photography. Even (especially, some would say!) done by the great Ansel Adams!

Cute kid, don't worry about cheating - if PP improves on the original where's the sin? You have to have the basis of the image right in the camera, no amount of PP will turn a fundamentally bad image into a good one!

I would imagine that geckos are easier to clean up after than giraffes (very limited experience here)...

Digitor's comments have reminded me of the photographer Frank Hurley (not sure if that is correct) - he was the official photographer for Shackleton's amazing antartic expedition where just about everything went wrong - anyway, I'm pretty sure he ended taking photos of the western front that were esentially composites, quite tricky for the time I believe.....
