Just thought I might post a few shots of a Sydney blues band i saw playing in Canberra last Friday night at the Old Canberra inn:









Tony Pedrosa and the Hawks. A band with roots that goes back to the Foreday Riders in the 60s. A really great full sound yet not blasting out the eardrums. A great night.

Nice Murray! the first one is a stand out for its composition! and that fella on bass in the other shot looks vaguely familiar

A few more details:
Tony Pedrosa (guitar), Gary Sparks (Bass), Henry Sliwka (drums). all Nikon 180mm AF-D, f2.8 6400ISO, 1/80, 1/80 and 1/60 respectively.
The band: Nikon 16mm f3.5 AI fisheye, 1/160 f3.5 25,600ISO, largely de-fisheyed. I didn't need to be at 25,600 as it turns out.
All taken with one of those newfangled digital camera thingys.

Yep, now you know one more. )

It's a 1977 Fretless P, solid neck - no separate fingerboard. I've owned her for over 20 years now. Badass Bridge. Strings are Ernie Ball Group IV - unobtainable here in Oz - I need to get a few new sets in from the USA. The Group IVs are ultra-light, flats, which help to make this a very playable, very nice sounding instrument. I Canberra I was running through an 80W Trace Elliott Combo. 10" driver pushing through a 1" vertical slot in the front of the cabinet. It's the fattest sounding 80W rig I've ever played through.

Actually, I suspect that the correct name of the bassist might be Gary Stark.

Passed the following info onto the other player... he is very impressed.
Must say that there is something special about the sound of a Fretless. (Spent years listening to one being played in my bedroom as a kid.)

It's not quite the same as an upright (I have one of those as well, but it steadfastly refuses to go on a diet and come to gigs in the SLK) but it is sort of close. Especially if I play over the fingerboard around P12, with good EQ.
