Second shot in sequence following on from yesterday's image, I think this one is actually better, any comments appreciated?

Just one suggestion, if you straighten the horizon the shot becomes more dramatic

Actually Chris, the background (if that's what you're referring to) is the slope of Mutton Bird Island, adjacent to Coffs Hbr Marina and Jetty

True, he's about to be dakked but I think we might fix that up in PS for decency sake!

This is the better shot of the two. The focus on this is sharp as a tack - I can feel the salt spray

Thanks for the positive comments, this one's going off to Billabong Inc, we'll see what happens, we can only hope...payments aside, this photography thing is very rewarding, waiting for weeks even months for the right moment.

What a privilege to come here every night and see a fantastic shot like this! I'm not a surfer by any stretch - but I do enjoy action / sports stuff like this. If I was a surfer I'd be absolutely wrapped to have this as a print!!

It's fun to do, and hopefully fun to make a bit of pocket money sometime in the near future (maybe to buy a nice 600mm Nikon lens of some description ...?) We'll see what happens, Max

You've brought up an interesting point, Chris, talking about the horizon in the picture.

If everyone is going to think that something is wrong with one of your pictures (even though it actually isn't), is it better to change it to make it look right to everybody or leave it alone? Especially when you won't be there to explain to each person that they are mistaken.

Any thoughts?

I agree with Stubbsy - I liked the other one but it was slightly out of focus. This one is spot on, another great shot.

Oneputt, good point, how does one define sharpness? I would imagine sharp at 100% magnification is the guide? Am I correct here? For eg, this image is very closely cropped and still sharp, others are sharp at maybe half cropped image? Just some thinking out loud here...Max

Sharpness is relative. Many portrait photographers avoid using modern lenses because they are too sharp. If the image demands sharpness then it must have sharpness. Some images demand softness. If I photograph my wife she demands softness. So, enough about sharpness.

Good point Matt. Of course I can use a modern lens and soften it during PP I guess.

another fantastic shot. You obviously have a hair trigger on that D70 to get that timing so perfect.

And the auto focus is right on the mark. What setting did you have it on? Dynamic?

Thanks Steve, and Jonesy, I am using a Tamron 70-300mm lens (no way I would take an expensive Nikkor out in the water), manual settings F6 @ 1/1250 I think, the Tamron takes ages to autofocus if you get away from the general area of focus, so I keep half pressing the shutter all the time to keep it in focus range, then it's a matter of being quick on the draw.
