Chris, I realise it is high key (the thread name gave it away) but there
are just too many blown highlights for me. I would rather see a much
narrower dynamic range with the darkest areas being light grey (say
around 192). I like the shot and the subject however.

the darks need to be darker, especially around his face.

It's more like posterisation rather high key. Greg B already said that there are just too many blown highlights. In high key you still have all details in lights and do not have deep shadows.
But the shot is nice however.

Thanks for the replies. It would appear that I am wrong as high keylight is:
”High key images have a predominance of white or very light tones and tend to look light and airy. High key lighting is often (but not always) soft, and detail is generally low.”
So it would appear that this is a semi high keylight

The first one for me as it has a lot more atmosphere....... less is more......
