Went out to see my wifes friends who have just had a bub. Got asked to take the phototaker along with me. Wasn't feeling to flash, but managed a couple of reasonable shots. Struggled with the lighting a bit though. Obviously went a bit wide and stuffed the focus a little on a few shots.

Norbs, I think you already know where you could have improved here, DOF-wise, particularly in #1. You can get away with a 2.8 for a shot of one person, head on, but with three people at varying distances from the lens you will need to stop it down a bit. The other issue in this photo is the way the guy's head disapears into the blown background. I'm guessing they were in front of a pretty bright window, so perhaps you could have picked a better spot.

However, #3 is fantastic because of the shallow DOF, and you've made wonderful use of available light to show the amazing texture on the baby's feet. Love the B&W conversion, also. This is a really lovely shot.

I also very much like #2. Yes, the DOF is shallow and you've focussed on his little nose and mouth, but it doesn't bother me so much in this case since his eyes are closed anyway, and a little bit of softness suits a portrait of a newborn.

Nicely done!

Cheers,

Yep. Points noted. Because it was in the hospital room, there was limited room and pretty hard to get good angles. Given my time again, and with a clearer head, I would have swung them around to face the window, but with a few other visitors there, I didnt want to intrude too much.

100% agree with Macka, especially on 1. Always hard when you are under pressure.

I like #2 most but I think the tones could be lightened up considerably. The pic of the feet will be priceless one day.
