Personally I am, mainly because the lightning is becoming the subject and not an enhancement to a scene. My tastes on lightning are that it shouldn't be the primary focus of a photo but should be accompanying something eg. an australian scene (eg. corn/wheat fields plus a farming station), or a city or a lake etc). Instead what we're getting is lighting over silhouetted trees and suburbia. Not my idea of an ideal lightning scene.

I'm certainly not getting sick of lightning shots....I'd just like to be able to take some myself! Although I do tend to agree with kipper, and it should enhance a landscape....one day I'll get there!

Great photo antman, and Jethro, I just saw yours on Weatherzone! I was watching it all unfold on the Sydney radar .....crap it looked good (I'm envious!)

Sorry if my post sounds too critical, and I think it's good learning how to capture lightning. Study the weather like Stormygirl does and put it to some good use. Chase the weather and learn how to capture it in it's full glory.

Kipper,

I understand your comments but I love seeing lightning pics (appreciating how hard it is to get a good one).

Not sure if you saw my other ones -

My mate and I shared taking turns of the D70, and we got some lightning shots nothing impressive compared to the standard that has been set this past week or so, but we also got some great shots of the cloud front.

I personally don't get sick of lightning shots, I find them exciting, nearly as much as being amid the storm oneself, some great shots above

VK4CP : very sorry to hear about all the damage, I really hope all the gear was insured... (how are you posting now if your ADSL modem was fryed?)

Couldn't agree more Kipper.

Keep the lightning shots coming... I dont think I'll ever get tired of them.

I just picked up the latest 'better pictures' magazine from CH. It's got a short article by Dan Paris about capturing lightning.

What's he have to say on the subject?

Nothing new...

Understand the weather
Anticipate strike locations
Sloooow shutter speeds
Plenty of luck :)

He also suggests finding a spot with good foreground interest. I guess he uses the lightning to enhance a landscape shot.

Hey VK4CP

Hopefully you don't get a bill from Telstra for the damage to their equipment in the exchange. In days gone by this could have been the case. According to regulatory all equipment fitted with a ACA sticker or T tick should be able to isolate the power from the communications wiring.

Also check your insurance policy regarding lightning strikes

A friend of mine's home office was struck by lightning. His fax was fried and it started a fire in his office. Fortunately only little damage. The insurance company wouldn't pay.

This why it is recommended to unplug all electrical equipment in your house during an electrical storm.

Did you see that Mythbusters episode where they emulated a lightning strike to a house while a person (Crash test dummy) was on the phone.?? The dummy was fried.
