Woke up just before the sunrise this morning and had two thoughts go through my mind, go back to sleep OR get up and go take some photos.
I decided to do the latter, and here are the results:











All taken in Williamstown (Melbourne). I was hoping for a little less cloud cover, but I'm reasonably happy with what I shot.

I am glad you got up and decided to take some photos instead of sleeping. The results look well worth it

The clouds add an extra dramatic dimension to your images. Sunrise is my favorite time of day for photography. Much better than sunset.

I really like #3 and the way you've captured those golden tones reflecting off the water

Dave, my favourite is number #2 followed by #3 as steve said the clouds help enchance these sunrise shots. BTW number 4 the horizon the the right looks crooked, but I think its just distortion from your lens.. that or the uneven cloud cover is just tripping with my eyes.

Killa - when I was shooting the HMAS Castlemain, I was thinking of you...believe it or not !

Stubbsy - I really like the yellow tones in the 3rd as well. I manually bracketed a few shots of this image, just to play it safe. This was the best one. I might try layering a couple for a "bigger dynamic range" look.

Alpha - I think it might be barrel distortion (or a touch of both). The kit lens out wide often bends the image (especially at the edges). I might start calling this lens the Yuri Gellar Lens

I also took a 19 image panorama of the Westgate Bridge right around to the end of the City Skyline. Didn't come out too bad (using Panorama Factory), although unfortunately it isn't "monitor friendly". You can either fit to screen, which takes away all the detail, or go 100% and have to scroll across the image - which takes away from the effect of the shot (as the downsized image is 6000px long & 750px high)

#2 and #3 my favourites Dave. Beautifully lit and exposed. That magic hour and your composition skills have done the trick.

Nice pano Dave, I've done a few big ones, I think 15 shots was my biggest thus far, in a little bit of a quandry as to whether I should print them and how big to print them. As you said pity about the sun, but we can only shoot with what the weather will provide.

Pano is good and looks like a typically overcast Melbourne day Thanks for sharing it. I'm impressed with the stitching too (I can see a little banding, but the only really noticeable join is on the funnel of the Toll? ship)

I wouldnt knock the clouds.
quite often they will enhance a shot by making a plain blue sky much more interesting.

my favourites here are #2 then 1.

Thanks Stubbsy. Panorama Factory is magnificent. Considering there are so many verticals (yacht masts) in the shot, which were all bobbing to and fro, it came out far better than I expected. The Toll ship was reversing into the docks, which is why it looks blurred and may not have stitched together 100%.

I might have a play and make a couple of smaller pano's from it, one of the Westgate Bridge and another of the city.

Avkomp - sorry, I didn't mean it to sound like I was knocking the clouds, as they do (and did) add to the photos. The image I had in my head was for more broken cloud with sun filtering through...but that's not what was on offer when I arrived....

All part of the learning curve...

Dave, wow i love #123, work well for me and think these are great. Other 2 are ok as well but yeh the top 3 really stand out to me and think it was worth getting up early for.
