One of those lucky shots.

Not that i am a believer in 'luck', as i believe it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time, but here is one of those shots that happens sometimes.

Taken at Jervis Bay, south coast NSW, during a shoot i did of a Search and Rescue (SAR) demonstration, saw a humpback whale breach behind the 'action.'

I've seen hundreds of Humpback whales in my life while travelling the 'high seas,' but i've never been able to take a breathtaking image of one breaching, this is the closest I have ever got to it.

Nikon D2H and 80-200mm F2.8, 1/640 @ F8. -0.5 EV. ISO200

Very nice.

Although I didn't think it was legal to hook Humpbacks on lines like that!

Terrific shot Killa. Did it breach much more after that? If so, how did the rest of your shoot go, were you paying attention? :)

Owen, i took a couple of hundred shots of the 'action', but i was always keeping one eye open for the whales, as there was a pod of them playing. Unfortunately this was the only open breach i saw them do all afternoon. :)

It's nice to know the Humpbacks are using the inside of Jervis Bay as a play area. This year since July i've seen them off Shark Bay in WA and Sydney and now Jervis Bay. They are really starting to get back up in numbers which is great to see.

Killa,
Great capture!
Don't you know, because with this photos, a fleet of Japanese whale fishing boats are heading to our water?

Steve this is a fantastic shot of a Russian V-class nuclear sub broaching. Since the end of the Cold War they disguise their subs as whales

Seriously, a very well caught action pic :D

As Geoff said, I like looking at your sea photos too. I love photos that get 2 for the price of one too. :D It was perfect timing, thanks for sharing.

Hey Steve. Was this taken on Friday? My wife was at JB and said she saw some helicopters doing stuff.

Owen, the pic was taken on Wednseday 26 Oct. It is not unusual to see Navy helicopters flying around the bay.

Thanks for the comments everyone, but the whale is the star of this image :) He/she was certainly trying to steal the centre of attention and succeeded very well.

Killakoala,
Another of my translation of the say to this photos:

 Is the RAN tried to use the Sea Hawk with the human body as a bait for those whale? The Japs have fleet of whale fishing boats and the RAN used the Sea Hawk
