I took my new tripod (Manfrotto 0055CLB and 029 3D head) down to the beach on Thursday evening for it's first outing. Here are some images you are welcome to critique...but just remember I'm still learning
I'm still also getting my head around Photoshop, but I have figured less is more, and really haven't done much to these other than sharpen and clone out some dust bunnies. I increased the saturation on the third one, and used the shadows/highlights for the last to bring out the pier and the ghostly figures a little.

__
#1 and #3 are with the kit lens, #2 and #4 are with the 70-300G. IIR, most were shot on f22 with bracketed shutter speeds. #4 is still quite dark in the foreground, and I know there is lens flare....I may work on it a little more! #3 still has dust on it....I forgot to take my lens cleaning cloth

.......but I love my new tripod!

Beautiful Jane!
these images bring bittersweet memories whoa!
The first one is stunning i would of just cropped in closer to the people still keeping them off centre but take it at a position where the sun is backliting them for best effect, but the image works either way
i can see you did something similar in the 2nd.

Is this around near where they filmed The Secret Life Of Us?

Great shots, these look like the Houghton Hwy, Clontarf? Keep 'em coming, Max

These are great Jane, and as Geoff said don't apologise. I like all of these, in order of preference #2, #3 #4 and then #1. Keep enjoying your new tripod and posting shots, seems like it was well worth getting up early to capture these shots.

Great pics Jane, they're all good and certainly have that 'atmosphere' that makes good shots.

Thankyou for all your positive comments everyone!
Geoff: Very near to 'The Secret Life of Us'. These were taken down at the Brighton Baths along the bike path and pier. The TV show was filmed mainly in St kilda just north of there, but may have used this location...dunno!
Alpha_7: These were taken at dusk....I don't get up early!

As Stormygirl said, Secret Life of Us was predominantly filmed around St Kilda near Ackland St. Very similar sort of setting and only a few ks up the road. I think St Kilda Pier was probably in the show, and has Fairy Penguins in a conservation area at the end.

I feel stupid now...

I guess I'm only used to sunrises over the water, not sunsets being a east coast resident. Regardless of what time they are taken the shots are great!

Great sunsets Stormygirl. I like the last one best. The lights, with their appealing flare, leading to the centre of the image and in to the distance really works for me.

Well done!

Alpha_7: Don't feel bad! That's the great part about living in the eastern burbs of Melbourne. An hour or so drive away from the sunrise over the beach, or 20 minutes and you can watch the sunset over the Bay!
Killa and Potatis: I really appreciate your feedback, thankyou very much!

Jane
An excellent group of quality shots. You're doing well. For me the first is not of the same standard as the others. I suspect it may be s ronger image with a tighter crop.

Thankyou for your comments Kerry and Stubbsy. A tighter crop would work...will do that next sunset, but different location!

Beautiful shots. I particularly like #3. Clever stylish composition.
