Mt Lindesay is on the Qld-NSW border near Rathdowney. Spectacular at sunset. Shot from Lamington Plateau. Any thoughts or advice welcome.

I'm a sucker for a nice sunset or sunrise, a magic time of day... Would have been interesting finding your way down after the sunset I must admit I usually carry a couple of little torches that run off AA's in the backpack for finding your way back...

Beautiful color, might be tempted to crop a smidge of the bottom maybe?

I had already cropped miles off the bottom so was a bit reticient to go much further. But, it was late last night when I was playing with this one so I probably wasn't seeing things too well.

Getting down was relatively easy. I walked from the O'Reilly's Guesthouse Lookout where I took the shot, just above the pool and spa, back to my car in the carpark, then drove down the mountain! It's a good quality sealed road all the way up Lamington Plateau now, albeit VERY windy and you have to keep your wits about you in the dark. There are a few places where the lack of guard rails makes a long plummet a very realistic prospect. I remember doing the drive several times as a kid and it was like the road up Pike's Peak!

I promised myself not to do it after sundown again; after a long day in the field it was just too dangerous not to have full concentration. I dropped the ball once and put two wheels of the 4wd onto the dirt shoulder and that scared the hell out of me. The edge loomed somewhat closely...

Hi Simon

I think you had a fairly challenging assignment here. The difference between the exposure values for the top one-third of the shot and the bottom one-third make it difficult to obtain a consistent shot.

I think this pic suffers from blown highlights in the clouds and also an underexposed foreground. Perhaps a tighter crop in camera may have removed the top clouds and allowed you to balance the exposure a bit more.

I hope you were at one with nature up there - it's a lovely environment.

Thanks for your observations and advice Trevor. Unfortunately it was at a time of the day when the brain was a bit dull and I just wanted to snap a few sunset shots as a parting gesture. The focus of the day was wildlife and getting as many of those shots right so I really didn't have my thinking cap on with these images.

Perhaps it's also a case of the wrong shot chosen for showing here - I've got a dozen or so others that I haven't looked closely at yet so maybe some of those will provide a more balanced view.

Really nice sunset.

Re: The way down, you should try Duck Creek Road. Far less windy, nowhere near the traffic, and very scenic. Its a 4WD track, but only cause its dirt (very simple dirt run). Pops you out near Beaudesert.

Thanks Dion. I know Duck Creek Road very well - probably been up and down it a dozen or more times in many different weather conditions. It's fun coming up in the wet!. I've got friends who live down that side as well - their cattle property's right at the very end of Kerry Road and their back paddocks butt right up against the national park boundary.

Hey Manta - Nice to see an orangy sunset instead of the usual pinks and yellows. There is something annoying about that damn rock though - it's in the way of the sunset. What? You can't move mountains? Oh, sorry.

Of course I can! You'll notice that Mt Lindesay is normally 2.7km south of this position but that was no good for my composition so I had to make some changes. I put it back when I was finished though...

Thanks Mark - I loved the colours too and the best part was that I didn't have to do a thing to them - the Big Guy upstairs handled the post-processing on this one.
