Big Sky view looking over to Williamstown


Took these today on and around station pier, Melbourne has some Anti- Terror ops in progress, hence small aluminium boat ??shown at speed,
those that know me , know i loooove big sky pics, nothing special about these shots, i just had fun taking them,
The Naval Tug is the Bandicoot.
There is a Collins class submarine in the bay but it was too far away for decent pics, in the taxi shot it is the very small black blob on the Horizon towrds the top right of the pic

I like the last one the best - lovely colour.

Your pix are too big - they require scrolling. They would be better if you kept each dimension to no greater than 800 pixels.

800 it is, never mix computer functions with Cab Sav !!

i'm surpised they did not come over and throw you to the ground and take your camera.

Shane, I attend station pier for most Warship arrivals and have been doing so for many years, since sept 11 things have changed dramatically, most times i am not allowed on the actual pier and have to arrive very early and get onto gem pier as the ''security'' people wont let me anywhere near station pier itself, they wont even let Navy personel family on !!, but if you are one of the many fisherman that frequent the pier then its a different story, i once asked, upon arriving and not being allowed on the pier, and seeing fishrman way down at the end of it, why they were allowed on and i wasn't, i was told ''they arrived earlier'' obviously terrorists don't arrive early !!! this whole security thing is ridiculus, yesterday when i walked through security i asked the guy on the gate if the pier was open and where the anti terror training people were he said ''the pier is open and the terror blokes are at lunch i think !!", i was able to walk all over the pier , right up to touch the naval tug , i got to the upper deck which is normally out of bounds and was not challenged until i had finished taking pics of the ferry on the other side of the pier, when a security women came and said '' can you please not take any pics as since sept 11 you are not allowed to'' i agreed to move on but she didn't ask me to delete the frames i had already taken,I normally don't take risks like walking all over the pier but yesterday i saw only one security gaurd, really quite unbelievable !

Your story is happened anywhere in Australia. It's a joke and a such wasting the monies of our taxpayers. Those "Rent a Cop" are everywhere and they're suck!!!!!!!
Terrorists are smarter than them and they know how to deal with those RaC.
We're only the photographers! Shame!!!!!!

Birdy, you are 100% spot on, and i fear things will only get worse, my wife who is very intuitive , said to me on the morning we were watching sept 11 happen on the t.v, ''well there goes our civil freedom"
little did i know how correct she was.
Will my grandchildren grow up in a country knowing no better ?????

Anyway, its been really hard to do street photography nowadays because of all the security measures that we all have to adapt to. The problem just used to be overcoming shyness during a shoot, now, things had become worst than what it should be...

Global poverty, drug abuse and all these crazy weather we had been experiencing is more a cause of concern for me than anything else, shouldn't we focus more on using our resources on that?

I think your all missing the point with regards to terrorism.

It gets me more toys to play with at work, and if something happens more overtime, which in turn lets me buy more lenses from Birdy.

So, to recap, the war on terror allows me to buy things which helps birdy.

So, it's all birdys fault!

Starting to think less and less of Aust Post. Hopefully it will arrive soon though.

If you want to visit a warship (or a good imitation of one) then HMAS Manoora will be visiting Station Pier on the weekend prior to the Melbourne Cup. (28 Oct-2 Nov.) Cameras should be allowed as you won't be going anywhere critical on the tour route.

An open day will be happening on Saturday 29 Oct, i am unsure what time though but should be around 10am - 4pm or parts thereof. The local media/newspapers should have times in them.

If i find out more info before we sail next week then i will post it here. I have been unable to find any references to it on the internet.

A great bunch of pics, but like Trevor says - TOO BIG

Try to keep the images under 800 pixels on their largest side (makes them fit standard screens and avoids having to scroll side to side to read the messages) and under 200K to assist those still on dial up (the images here add up to about 2.5Mb - that's a long wait on dial up).

Choppers? Yes and they live in the Wardroom.

If you mean helicopters, then no, we won't have any onboard and i don't think we will have any visiting. Our visit is mainly for public relations as we are involved in quite a few activities over the weekend.
