I was just about to go to bed but i couldn't resist. Thought I'd share my experimentation with macro this weekend with 2 of my lenses. The AI-S Micro Nikkor 55 F/2.8 and my Nikon 35-70 F2.8 on macro setting.
What is the image? Which lens took which image?

Marco

I'd say it's a prickly pear. The first one is the 55 and the second the 35-70. The first shot is way sharper, hence my feeling on the 55 (of course you could get closer with the 35-70 :? )

First one 55mm, second 35-70.

Cheers.

Hi
I would say that the first one is by the 55mm
and the second one with 35-70. I think that the 35-70 only has macro at the 35mm end. 35-70 2.8 NON ED and NON D lens ?

It is a Cho Cho.

Cheers Albert

thanks for contributing guys. It is indeed a cactus leaf. I perhaps should have tweaked the colour on the second to the same as #1 to even them up but the sharpness would not change. It could be argued that my technique was better in the first or I was just lucky.
Actually the first is the 35-70 F2.8 set on macro mode(cropped in though!) and the second is the 55 micro. It surprised me too but i suspect that the difficulty of getting the right focus etc with the 55 as it is all manual on the D70 has something to do with it, because it is a very sharp lens. I will still persevere with it to find a shooting work flow that produces more consistent results. However no question as to the sharpness of the 35-70. This is the reason why I chose it to do the jewelry pamphlet job a few months ago.

Hi Marco
Very interesting and good shots anyway.
Is the lens the non ED and non D lens?
I have one for the last 16 years, it is AF but the macro setting is at 35mm end and goes to manual focus. I have neve used it for macro but will try.

There are 2 of these lens on ebay at the moment with low bids on.

Cheers
Albert

Thanks Albert. Its the AF 35-70 F/2.8 D series. Yeah your right the macro switch activates on the 35mm end. It's a lovely lens though a bit prone to lens flare.

I'd venture to suggest that the more diffuse illumination in the second shot has a not inconsiderable impact upon the perception of acutance also.
