Love your shots, they are all great!

The only thing I would do differently is not place the horizon dead centre, maybe include more of the ocean instead? just my opinion of course.

Great shots but I would have to say just by looking at your shot of the HMAS Ballarat I would probably get sea sick!

The D2H really shines in thsi group of pics

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I think the D2H and 80-200 is going to be a favorite combo of mine for this type of image. I am really impressed with the clarity of the images with this lens.

Chris - I'll be giving the Tokina 28-70 a go at portraits soon but it seems pretty good so far.

Muzza22au - When i do a final crop i don't really look at the horizon, i just put the subject in a visually pleasing spot in the frame. It just happens that the horizon ends up in the centre of the image unintentionally. :) I do try to keep it straight though, but every now and then one will get through my scrutiny.

LostDingo - THe Ballarat photo looks worse than it was. It wasn't really that rough but the ANZAC class ships tend to spend a lot of time with their nose in the water due to their shape. ANZAC's don't roll that much unlike my ship which spends most of it's time rolling due to it having a flat bottom ;)

Hello killa

I always enjoy your images - please keep them coming!

OK I'm confused.... perhaps you or other members can explain this:

HMAS Hawkesbury next to Fort Denison, Sydney Harbour (D70 - 85mm F1.4 @ F4 1/1600)

Why have you used F4 and such a fast shutter speed?

The settings have obviously worked, but I would have thought that the DOF @F4 would quite limiting for this sort of shot. If I was asked to guess the F number you had used, I would have said 16 or more because of nice background...

Am I missing something here?

Cheers
Gecko

Nice shots Steve, having grown up in Portsmouth in the UK plus my father being in the Navy, I have a soft spot for 'Grey Ships'. :)

Steve, you usual great shots again of the Navy scene. I like them all and think all the pics you do while out there on a floating tin can and bloody great and always enjoy looking at them as well as your site from time to time. Keep it up mate.

Gecko. That morning i was just playing with apertures and took the boat with different ones, but that image worked best due to where the boat is in relation to Fort Denison. I took about 20 images of it.

It was quite a dark overcast morning although the PP makes it look much brighter than it really was, which explains why i was using a wide aperture.

I may also have shot it at ISO400 but i can't be sure right now. :)
