I've started getting out a bit at lunchtimes, to clear my mind away from the office...

Bare Island Fort was built to defend Botany Bay in time of war - don't think it would have been all that useful, but strange things were done at times

12-24DX @ 18mm, f9 1/100sec - Polariser and some levels adjustment (still experimenting a little here - any comments?).

It is the only National Park that I know has guard dogs! Although I think this one may have licked you to death - as long as you didn't try to get through the gate

This is good and it's good to see you getting out and about. Nothing so scenic near my work at lunch time.

I'd have like to see two alternate takes on this. ONe with the pier centre running away to the island and another firther to the right of the image so the pier was on a sharper angle if possible.

PP is great - the water looks inviting - odd for Botany

didnt tom cruise go splat on that island in one of his movies?

I think I know what Stubbsy is talking about. I'd like to see the pier pylons if you'd call them that more visible so you'd have to be position to the right more or the left. Which ever gives the best lighting and background.

Thanks for the comment on PP - as I say, I'm trying something new to me and not really sure if I'm getting good results. I also think my screen is way out again, as these are coming up way too dark printed

I think I'm slowly coming to terms with this lens - and learning not to use it at it's extremes so much! I also found today that it seems to work far better around f9-13 rather than higher.

and yes, I should probably clone or crop the headland on the left horizon out!

The shot down the pier is exactly what I meant and the people in the shot make it. This works well, although, being greedy, I'd like the camera a bit more elevated.

Second sideways shot is also what I meant, but I'd crop the bottom 1/4 and clone the island or whatever it is in the top LH corner then you've nailed it.

I agree, I tried cropping the bottom by scrolling the screen up and it makes an interesting pano-style photo.

By cropping the bottom 1/4 of the screen you are really not getting the WA effect of this lens; so perhaps the advice should be to shoot with a standard lens rather than a WA. A standard lens, or the kit lens at around 40-50mm would probably give a different perspective to the building.

I actually don't mind the perpective from the WA lens - I like the foreground rocks and water. I agree that a lower viewpoint may improve the pic, and cloning out the headland on LHS would also be a beneft.

It's nice to see the workings of an image being "made".
