Composition in general is good. Maybe touch of crop from the right. I dont like branch in the background. Photoshop could help. Possibly I would compose it as top of the lizzard muzzle is clean. Bark - Lizard. This approach could help to have feeling of crawling - lizard have short lengs. Now you have a bit of bark behind. I know it is very difficult to think about all these things in action :)

Interesting texture on both, somehow works well together. Propably it supposed to ;-) Well metered and exposed.

Last though - maybe it could be better to show mroe leg, now it seems to be a separate bit ;-)

G'day Will,
Don't they make terrific subjects? Like a prehistoric creature, mean lookin' critter. Background branch may be a smidge awkward but in the heat of battle it's sometimes too quick to wander around trying to select your background huh...

With that mottled light coming through, you've done a terrific job on the exposure...

Kpol and Mudder - I totally agree about the stick emerging from the poor beasts head. Thanks for pointing it out to me.

More goanna pics to come shortly. They do make terrific subjects, except when they get ancy and charge at you! I found they do not like it when you try to get down on the ground at their low level. Almost guaranteed a biting.

This is an interesting photo, but the lighting is poor, especially with the bright background.

I'd suggest trying to use fill flash with these type shots, if you can. That would help get your aperture smaller for more DOF too.
