Hi,

Set of images from Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo, where we went last long weekend. Everything shot with 80-400VR, appertures 7.1-8, most in A mode, some in manual. Camel is far from perfect (i was shoting it through the cage net) but I quite like expression.

Hi Mikhail,

great shots. The Western Plains Zoo was a place that I wanted to visit prior to going to Africa, but didn't get a chance to go out. It still is high on my list of places to visit.

Love the rhino and giraffe and the hippo. Great detail on the elephant, but it doesn't quite "get" me, not sure why, maybe it's because I can't see its eye.

The expression on the fox is great, love it.

Cheers,

Radar.

Three years ago, same long weekend, I was at the same zoo and know how difficult it is to obtain good shots - you have done very well Mikhail, but I guess the lens helps a lot 8)

Thanks, Andre, Chris!

Andre,
After Africa Wesern Plains Zoo would be less interesting for you, I recon :) But it still great zoo worth to visit. It wasn't possible to catch elefants' eyes because they are shadowed by lashes and light wass to harsh and contrast. From about 15 elefants shots neither of them has eyes visible :(

Chris,
80-400VR is just brilliant and helped a lot! :)

I agree on the harsh light at Dubbo - but, did you take any night shots in Dubbo itself - IMO it looks better at night

Uhm, I took my new heavy tripod with me and carried it around but, honestly, I didn't find any interesting place in Dubbo itself to take a night shot :( Maybe I was looking in wrong directions and wrong places .....

I think that was Chris's point....Dubbo looks best in the dark when you can't see it!

Ah, now I see :)

Andre, BTW, I forgot to tell ... what you think is a fox isn't really. It is a maned wolf - they are bigger and stronger than foxes

Saw that when I was browsing on your website,

From the Wildlife World Zoo

The Maned Wolf from pampas areas of South America looks more like a fox on stilts.

thanks,

Radar

it IS a very foxy wolf.

love the shot of the Guanaco. Very cute animals that I know my wife would keep were it legal.

Indeed. Melbourne Zoo has some also.

Despite the filename on the image, that's NOT a Guanaco. It's a large rodent (maybe a Capybara? Not sure) that's in the same enclosure as the Guanaco.
This photo was taken at the Western Plains Zoo when I was there two weeks ago, and you can see the rodent in the upper left. The Guanaco is related to llamas more than to rabbits. ;)

You're right. Sorry. It's a Patagonian Cavy. There were few different animals in one area and I just wrote down their names but didn't remember who is who
