MotoGP 2005

Whilst i saw there was another thread for the MotoGP i decided rather than contaminate that thread i'd post my own.

I headed down to the Island on Saturday, riding down with one mate through the twisties via Warragul & Korumburra. Got down there about 11am and set up camp on the final 2 turns before the main straight.

After looking at a few other shots some people had taken down there, i think mine are a little 'lacking' but i'm happy with them considering it was my first real outing shooting anything fast. Had a helluva time trying to pan fast enough to keep up with them!

All of these were shot at ISO200 @~300mm on my D70 w/ 70-300G (yes, that's right.. a G). I'd love to be able to afford some better glass but for the time being it's my gear and i love it. I spent most of the time shooting in AF-C and just trying to pan quickly enough to get a decent image @~1/350s.











Comment and criticism greatly appreciated - but keep in mind it's my first outing shooting anything motorsport.

Hey Koma, I think these are fantastic shots considering it was you first go at motorsports. You were able to get in quite close and it's great to see a variaty of shots from different parts of the track.Well done, mate!!
Looks like this forum is really starting to pick up in this area and more the merrier too!
Pity we didn't know you were going to the races, otherwise we could have met up. Our resident guru BBJ (John) and I had a great time snapping away.
I know what you mean about the lens. I'm using the Sigma equivalent, and only wish I had something a bit faster. But, for now it works fine and I guess it's a great lens to learn on and to hone down the skill.
As far as critique. It would only be a small one and that be to see if you can lighten up the images abit. This all depends how they appear on you monitor though, but they look quite dark.
Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing more!

Koma on my monitor the images are OK definately not too dark. Good results for a first outing of this nature.

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone.

The images as they are now are about right for my eyes & my monitor, but I was actually having a bit of trouble with the levels. It just seems that as there's so much dark tarmac and strong highlights in the reflections from the bikes and ripple strip - it occasionally made the metering in my D70 lose it!

waspo - Yeah, if i knew i was going down there earlier i would've definitely chased you guys to meet up. Unfortunately i decided to go down at 3:30am on the Saturday morning; got up 3 hours later and headed down there.

Hi Koma, the images look great! I know what you mean about the metering. It was all over the place for me too and that tarmac can really throw the focus out. Needed to focus on ripple strip often. I don't know about you, but I've got a hell of a lot of images to go through.

Yeah, i ended up taking about 250 shots... and i was screening them and deleting the OOF ones as i went. I flipped through them and just found 15-20 of them that i liked and looked good - then PP'ed those few.

Had an awesome time, although i got quite sunburnt.
I'm definitely going to another one of the track days though... so much fun!
