Hi, I'm new here - 1st post.

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Hi all! I'm new to the forums (been lurking for a couple of weeks) and new to photography in general, so I thought it was about time I surfaced to say “hello” and introduce myself. I just bought my first SLR (a DSLR at that!) a couple of months ago: a D70s duty-free at Narita airport on my way to Berlin for a short student exchange. Before that my history with photography is quite limited, I messed around a bit with B&W on my mum's pentax (el cheapo, I think it was a MZ-5?) for a couple of years.

Anyhow, here's a mix of photos to show you what I'm about. Please throw out some comments, and please don't hold back or feel the need to be polite. I'm a big man, I can take it :)

A friend of hers gave her that star cushion as a parting gift, which I think is such a good prop!

This is one of my favourites, despite the burnt out areas. I saw the graffitied/enhanced mailbox and just as I whipped out my camera, the mailman came to collect the mail and to complete the picture

As you can no doubt tell already, I have a definite preference for people as subjects over landscapes/flora/fauna, and I'm not deterred by grainy/noisy, shaky, long, poor exposures :)

Welcome! :) Nice first post, I particularly like number 1 (on the train), that's some subject matter I'm keen to investigate further! Despite the noise in the second one (maybe thanks to it) you've really captured the moment there, great stuff! Like the mailbox too, well done. Looking forward to seeing more of your pics, thanks for posting! :)

welcome!

interesting set of images - like the first one best - may i be so bold as to suggesting cropping the left hand side of the image - i think it would strengthen it as the focus would be on the lady - looking at you - and the bloke back right, looking at the lady - to my mind its those elements that make the shot
in the beginning was the word, and the word was Aardvark......

Welcome to the forum! I agree with the others that the first image is top, really punchy and reminds me of an add shot.

You have a nice raw reportage feel to your images
but the 1str image of the blow kiss is totally dimensional, the expression, moment captured and the little things like hood and the blury background all make for a very interesting and charming image.

Great work lotophage.

Number 1 really does leap out as an outstanding shot, but all are good. Welcome to the forum.

Yep number 1 is great. It has a real creative advertising magazine feel to it.
