I took these two images within a couple of minutes of each other and from slightly different angles.

Do they work, and if so which is best? It might be obvious but I feel that I need to add that it was very foggy.

Interesting... These photos look completely different on my two monitors...
On the LCD, they are lighter and it is easy to make out the boat and the ripples on the water... On my CRT (which I thought was the more accurate) they are quite dark and I can hardly see the boat...

On the whole I think that they would benefit from being a tad lighter to bring out the detail...

The banding around the sun is a little distracting too, but that may have happened in your JPG conversion...

The top one has the makings of a very moody image...
Cheers, John

Leek I have done as you suggested but do you not think that it now looks even blockier around the sun?

Yep :-(... There is quite heavy pixelation in the trees and reflections as well... Are those visible when you're viewing the NEF in PS... If not then you should be able to fix it by finding the right size for the JPG and by saving it at the maximum quality...

Hmmm... that doesn't seem to improve it a lot...

You said saved as JPG and then resize...
Did you do it in that order??? If so, try resizing while in 16bit mode, then changing the mode to 8-bit and then saving as JPG... This will minimise the loss when resizing.

If not, then I'm not sure what's causing the banding / pixellation... Maybe one of our more informed gurus can help...

On the other hand - maybe I just need to calibrate my monitor again
Can anyone else see what I'm seeing??? How to correct???
Cheers, John

I like the lighter one for the fact you can see the boat :) But then the sun goes crappy. The darker one, the sun is really good, but you can't see the boat! :o

OK - try this...
Wack in a graduated filter to make the sun darker, but leave the boat lighter. See how this looks :)

I really like the mood of these, just need a bit of 'digital darkroom' treatment and they'll sing :)

Great capture :D Looks a lot like an oil painting...agreed with the sun needing to be the darker version.

OK this time I played with the curve a little to dull the bright areas and lighten the dark areas, then I resized whilst in 16 bit, changed to 8 bit and coverted to JPEG at the max resolution.

That looks a lot better on my monitor. Nearly all the blockiness is gone...
Hope it looks as good on other people's monitors... :-)

Printing at A3 would probably bring out the detail even more...

Teh very first one is the best, i think the boat introduces context to a languid but deeply mysterious and moody scene which is best left obscured and non defined. The soft green tone reminds me of a scene on a distant world.
